Key West Fishing Charters with Capt. Tony murphy
Greetings from Key West! Hello from Capt. Tony Murphy with Key Limey Charters. Thank you for your interest in my Key West Fishing Report and Fishing in Key West and the lower keys!
Cooler weather has finally reached us down in the lower keys. With the temperature drop, the flats will be on fire as fish move in to feed over the back country. Unfortunately, we will have some rough winds by end of the week. With gust hitting the high 20’s. Fall and winter can bring some swirly winds occasionally.
The Bone fishing has continued to be on fire. With the cooler waters on the flats, mid-day fishing can continue as the water temps will encourage all day feeding.
Many captains and anglers are reporting a large number of fish to the west and north of Key West. With hot mid-day waters giving way to ideal temperatures, anglers can find more time to target these “Ghosts” of the shallows.
The Permit have been sporadic much of the summer. Most Captains are still reporting good numbers of Permit, but they have been hit or miss on most days. Being at the right place and time and ready with a good crab fly is key.
Juvenile Tarpon have been quite active this early fall too. With the cooler water comes a lot of bait into the flats. Cudas, Jacks and Sharks are all great targets this time of year as well.
Whether you are on fly or spin, these brutes of the flats can be your best shot sometimes as the water temps approach the mid 70’s.
With the large influx of bait this time of year, reef fishing can be spectacular as snappers, grouper, and other species all move in after the abundant bait.
Just outside of the reef line in deeper water, look for late summer Dolphin, and “smoker” King Mackerel to be cruising along the deeper ledges hungry as well.
The Tuna and Wahoo bite have been very active as well. Just remember a live well full of fresh bait is always the key to catching Tuna this time of year.
Blackfin tuna also makes for a great challenge on fly too!
See above fishing reports for relevant information.
