Get Ready To Fish Key West!
The weather has continued to be on the warm side for this time of year. With October just around the corner, the water temperature should start falling. Hopefully with all the rain showers over the last week, we should start to see some cooling down effect over the flats and shallows as well.
The bone fishing continues to be this summer’s hot fish with many captains still finding large schools of fish on the flats. The permit fishing has been brutal these last few weeks. Most reports of permit have been of them moving quickly over the flats and not offering up many shots. For whatever the reason, they continue to be the most challenging fish for the flats!
The Tarpon fishing has been steady as well lately, with your best chance for a shot at one has been very early in the morning. Most are still juvenile fish in the 15-45lb range but still offer up a great fight on lighter fly rods. A 9wt. or 10wt. rod is all you need for a good fight.
Jacks, Mangrove snapper and Cudas are all still easy to find along the mangrove back islands and offer a lot of fun whether on fly or spin fishing gear.
Offshore has seen some cooler water from the gulf stream pushing in and over the reef line. With the cooler water, we have started to see more ore bait moving in to shallow water areas.
The yellow tail snapper fishing has been great with larger size fish coming in to the reef line following the bait. Grouper and other Snapper species will all start to follow suit too. Look for live bottom just off the reef line. This where a lot of the bait will be cruising.
Along with the all the bait, look for hungry Tuna, Dolphin and mackerel to be chasing them. The Blackfin Tuna will also be showing up as the bait schools get larger and closer to the reef line.
See above fishing reports for relevant information.
